News came recently that to address the severe pollution in groundwater, relevant government authorities are preparing a state groundwater monitoring project. Covering 16 national key regions including the Yellow River, Huaihe River and Haihe plain, the Yangtze River Delta as well as Northeast Plain, the project will monitor groundwater levels, groundwater quality and land subsidence. The relevant government authorities will endeavor to complete the first round of investigation and evaluation of groundwater pollution before 2015.
It is said that the Ministry of Environmental Protection will receive monitoring data in the near future, which is to serve as reference for supervision against excessive extraction of groundwater and water pollution. In the next phase, relevant government authorities will focus on the 1:50,000 hydrogeological investigation in southwest karst region, important state energy bases, key economic areas and key construction area, and strive to complete the first round of nationwide investigation and evaluation of groundwater pollution before 2015. In addition, they will organize the implementation of the national groundwater monitoring projects and promote groundwater monitoring along with Ministry of Water Resources.
The 2011-2016 National Plan for Groundwater Pollution Prevention jointly released by 3 ministries in last October involves projects including groundwater contamination investigation and groundwater environmental regulatory capacity building projects with a total investment of 34.66 billion yuan. One of the key tasks is to carry out groundwater pollution investigations in various regions and key areas, complete groundwater pollution investigation and assessment by the end of 2015, get to know the basic situation of groundwater pollution, and conduct in-depth analysis of the causes and development trends of groundwater pollution.
As of May 2012, according to the 2011 China Land and Resources Public Report issued by Ministry of Land and Resources, of the 4277 groundwater monitoring centers nationwide, 55% observed waters resources of poor or extremely poor quality.
The official website of Ministry of Land and Resources disclosed days ago that a large scale land resources investigation plan project named Investigation and Assessment of Groundwater Pollution in North China Plain has passed expert evaluation and will be initiated by the Institute of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.
